Made with a circular disk closure that is mounted on a shaft, butterfly valve provides a wing-like movement which comes from rotation.

This movement closes the flow at right angles. It generally opens and closes to control the flow. The valve is known for its mechanical use of regulating and isolating certain substances’ flow.

The valve is best for controlling the entry and exit of water, air and other chemicals. Butterfly valves feature a disk that is escalated on a rod. Turning the valve by a quarter, the disk closes off the passageway. With an extra quarter turn, the valve provides an unrestricted passage. The valve is popular for its simplicity in creating close or open passages through a couple of turns.

Butterfly valve selection

As its name suggests, the valve looks like a butterfly. It has a rod running through the center of the disk. The rotating disk is mounted on the rod. To select the right butterfly valve, you need to understand the two major designs: the lug and the wafer styles. Other designs include double eccentric, concentric and the triple eccentric.

The wafer design is mainly installed between the flanges of two pipes. The flanges are held by bolts thus keeping it in place. This style of butterfly valves is the most commonly bought by users. The design maintains a seal that is air tight against high pressures. This helps to avert backflows. The wafer style is cheaper compared to the lug design. Lug style provides dead end service; which is not available in the wafer design. Lug designs have threads inserted on the sides of the body. It is installed between two pipe flanges though every flange has different bolts. When choosing the right butterfly valve, one should consider factors such as the bolt connection required and the technicalities as well. The amount of pressure and control needed is also a consideration point.

Maintain Butterfly valves

Proper instructions and directions should be followed while installing and maintaining the valves. Since the valves are used in daily activities such as in the car carburetor, they deserve keen maintenance to avoid malfunction. The valve is thus cleaned and serviced on a frequent basis.

Parts of a Butterfly valve

The valves come in different sizes and technologies. They are designed to handle different pressures and functions. The valve has the disk, body, seat, handle or the operator. The parts work in collaboration to deliver maximally.
